Where are all the DA40 XLTs?

Post by smoss »

While I always see a multitude of new XLTs for sale on Controller, etc., from a variety of dealers, I have never, ever, seen a used XLT from the past 10 years shown for sale anywhere, nor have I ever seen one on a ramp anywhere at an airport. There are a spattering of the first 2012/2013 XLTs that show up for sale, but nothing past that ever. Have there actually been any produced/delivered in the past few years, or are they just a mythical creature?

Diamond Canada discontinued production of Lycoming DA40s when Garmin forced the transition from Legacy G1000 to G1000 NXi in 2017, so XLT production ceased after 2013-2016.

But due mostly to demand from a few flight schools who preferred Lycoming engines, Diamond re-certified the XLT with NXi in 2020. So new DA40 buyers in North America now have a choice of NG or XLT models built in Canada, with nearly all buyers selecting the DA40NG.

All due respect to Mr. Passmore, his info is a bit inaccurate. Diamond never "ceased production of the DA40 Lycoming versions" per se. Yes there is always a lag in configuration change which made availability on the long side. That said, more of a determining factor was the robust adoption by the market of the DA40NG which consumed more of the production than they were capable of fulfilling so the lack of focus on the Lycoming version exacerbated the time lag for availability. Dave is correct that both versions are fully available, subject to order backlogs, for either model.

Jeff, I think the question was why there aren't any used DA40-XLTs built between 2017 and 2020 for sale in the US market. From what I understand, Dave's answer is accurate—semantics aside, as to what "ceased production" means. On the plus side, no G1000 NXI "Phase 1" Lycoming DA40s were built in Canada.

Did Diamond Austria continue producing the Lycoming DA40 with the Legacy G1000 avionics between 2017 and 2020? If so, that might explain the different answers between the US and Europe about used 2017-2020 XLT availability.

Could you even order a Lycoming powered DA40 during this time? I recall the model was even dropped from Diamond’s website.

With all the AD issues with the Astro powerplants, you would think the Diamond upper management would now be promoting the XLT with the bullet proof Lycoming engine. That said, it appears they are still in production by special order as a 2025 XLT is on the Premiere Aircraft inventory list. Not sure what the NTBD means.

You can get one from any of the dealers as a built to order plane, with a lead time of a year+ last time I inquired. But with all the tales of woe regrading new Diamond planes recently, that doesn't sound very enticing.

I love my DA40 XLS (2011) and will keep it. I will never have an Austro engine airplane. For those wanting to sell, they’re easy to sell without advertising on the internet. I get offers on mine all the time. If I wanted to buy new I would still get the lycoming version.
