HF Radio installation

Post by DIBEN »

I'm looking for help with my conviction to equip my DA62 with HF radio for a trip around the world. Unfortunately, I have no idea about radio technology and have read a lot about problems with a temporary installation. Does anyone have an idea as to the best way to install it?

I just went around the world in my DA42. I did the route via the VHF-allowed NAT route (CYFB - BGSF - BIRK - EGPC). Then I crossed the Pacific via RJCK - PADK, where no HF is required.

The previous owner of my plane put it out the window with a fish-reel antenna. He had to return to Hawaii when he got denied clearance because his antenna wasn't long enough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhJgKQiH3WQ

Feel free to give me a call if you want to discuss flying around the world. It's quite an adventure!

Ah okay, you took this way. How about fuel in Adak? Did you have to order that before and they stored it there? Maybe you are right with this way. How about the weather up there?
And have you bought the plane in Germany?

There is JET in Adak. Currently for $7.59/gal, but available, and by truck. They have Alaska airlines service a few times a week with a 737. Fuel is no problem if you burn JET. However there is no customs in PADK, so you'll have to get permission to land if going eastbound. It was doable for me as a US Citizen with some polite asking.. not sure for non-US. Make sure to coordinate with the Adak airport manager for your arrival. The island has 50 people, so you want them to know you're coming.

I bought my plane in the US.

Shoot me a message if you'd like to talk more.

That sounds great, thank you so much. Maybe this route is really better, shorter and no HF required. I will check for a permission and customs but that should be possible.

I just heard from somebody else who was flying this route, that there is HF required as well??? Maybe this changed, do you know who can tell me what‘s correct today?
