Prop strike on Austro E4-C engines

Post by MWC »

I just purchased a DA42 that suffered a gear collapse and subsequently, prop strike on both engines.

Does anyone know what is required for return to service following prop strike on the Austro engines ?

Also, who is the best / most experienced shop for Austro's in North America ?

Thanks !

My club's DA40NG had a nose wheel collapse back in April. Still waiting for a new(!) engine from Austro

There are good shops in multiple states. Where is the plane located?

Does that mean that Austro prop-strike = new engine ?

Meaning a "good shop" can perform a shock-load inspect on these engines ?

Meaning they can assess the situation and advise.

I spoke with a very reputable Dealer, not far from your location, and the very experienced Tech told me straight up he has no idea how Austro will treat this and that the Mx documentation is, shall we say, "vague" on the subject, hence my query here.

I was told that Austro back-log is currently 12 months, so your club's DA40NG is probably going to be outa commission until next Spring !

If you ask me, this is totally outrageous. I would be just a bit more than "pissed" if I had just spent well over $1Mil on a new 42 or 62 ...

Attached is the official word from Austro.

My memory is that those new engines will be €47,500 each, plus shipping from Austria. The good news is that the dollar is pretty much at parity with the Euro.

It depends what the power setting was at the moment of the prop strike. If the engines were at idle it doesn’t need a new engine. It will need new props (or prop repair) and new gearboxes. But this will still be in the range between 15.000,- and 25.000,- per engine. I am referring to an incident from 2012. So it may have changed since then.
I don’t know how it is when the engines were not at idle.
