G1000 Nxi Phase II questions

Post by photoSteveZ »

So I took delivery of 62.C041 this week, and I've come up against a couple of questions that I'm sure someone here can answer.

1) How do you take advantage of the 3D audio feature I've read about, where you highlight ATC in one ear and intercom chatter in the other? I know there was discussion of this in a previous thread, but I can't find it.

2) The FAA gets testy if I fly in the ATC system as "Angel Flight nnnn" when my transponder is squawking an N-number. The Nxi Phase I in my previous DA62 made it easy to change the transponder's output ID code from my N-number to my Angel Flight code through an edit field located at the bottom of the Timer/Ref popup on the PDF. But the Nxi Phase II doesn't have that feature, or at least I haven't found it.

On the legacy G1000 this requires a configuration option be enabled. I'd imagine this is still the case for NXi. And since NXi interfaces with the GTX-345 config you should be able to do this yourself. Boot up the PFD and MFD holding ENT until the screen shows INITIALIZING SYSTEM (presuming it still does that for NXi.) Then go to the transponder config page and enable the option.

It's operational, but not enabled by Diamond because it's not certified. You have to go into the G1000 maintenance mode and enable the feature, which is a little tricky, then enable it again on the Aux configuration page.

The attached King Air G1000 maintenance manual gives you the general understanding of how maintenance mode works. It will require a little study. You want to be careful to not change other parameters and to complete the process properly to avoid getting a configuration error.

I have a ForeFlight callsign, but you can't use it for international flights, which means I haven't bothered to learn how to change the G1000.

You'll likely want to go into G1000 Maintenance Mode to change 3 things that Diamond hasn't enabled with NXi Phase II:
- enable 3D audio
- enable passengers in rear seat(s) to hear ATC radio communications
- add an option so you'll be able to change your transponder/ADS-B Out ID to a call sign in Timer/Reference field on the bottom of the PFD.

I want all three of those things, but I haven’t been able to find the page(s) where those things are enabled.

Would you be kind enough to explain how it’s done, using simple instructions adapted to the meanest understanding? ;)

Thanks in advance.

I followed your instructions and held ENT on the MFD at power-up, but my maintenance mode looks nothing like your screen shot and I cannot find a ‘transponder configuration’ page.

Looks like I’ll have to crack the shrink wrap on my new G1000 manual.

Sorry, but you probably won't be able to perform the 3rd action (i.e., enable a call sign) in Maintenance Mode unless you also have the G1000 NXi Loader Card for your particular airframe. Diamond Austria used to include this SDCard with their deliveries, but Diamond Canada does not. The only way to get a Loader Card is from an authorized Garmin dealer who has password access to the dealer website, and can create the card by downloading an .exe file. Each loader card is tied to your specific G1000 NXi System ID. :(

For the first 2 items (Loader card not required), in Maintenance Mode find the audio panel GMA Page Group. There you'll be able to scroll through about 3 pages of options, each of which you can change from OFF to ON. You'll easily find the 3D audio options (for both pilot and co-pilot), but it took me awhile to find the option to enable ATC radio for passengers:

"While passenger in ICS, route selected COM audio to passenger"
Just change OFF to ON

And there's a similar setting:
"While passenger in ICS, route selected NAV audio to passenger"
although I don't think most passengers care about hearing marker beacons, morse code, or VOR audio communications.

You might want to read this entire thread: viewtopic.php?t=7412

None of this information is included in the G1000/NXi Garmin Pilot's Guides -- since pilots/owners are not supposed to be fooling around in G1000 Maintenance Mode.

I read that other thread front to back. Here’s what I see when I try to enter Configuration Mode. It doesn’t look anything like the configuration pages I expect to see.

This looks promising. You are on the system status page which is the same initial page on the legacy G1000. You need to use the big and small FMS knobs to navigate to the right pages.

This screenshot shows the pages for the legacy G1000. Transponder config is on the GTX pages. You use the large knob to navigate to GTX and the small knob to navigate to transponder config.

This screenshot describes how to enable PFD entry for the flight ID.

For the audio panel you need to use the big knob to navigate to the GMA page.
