Intentional Off-Field Landing, IBEX, UT
First off-field landing in the 62… IBEX is a great spot. Dry lakebed similar to the salt flats. LZ is 1/2 mile wide and probably 2-3miles long at least…

How my luck is, if I tried that both engines wouldn’t have restarted.
Sweet photos Mark!

Who needs Alaska bushwheels?? *laughing*. Great pics and thanks for sharing. That’s one of the cool things about Diamonds in that you can land them off-pavement.

Yeah I think the closest thing to an FBO is “Clover Control” who was managing the MOA that this place is in… we were cleared into the MOA, but also heard them vectoring A-10s in a nearby MOA. It’s a pretty cool area… but I’m pretty sure a crew car would’ve been a Humvee.

Sweet! Did you just fire it up and take off straight ahead from that position?

Re: Off-Field Landing, IBEX, UT
Yeah basically… slow progression with the throttles until we had some ground roll (trying to reduce kicking up FOD) and then steady progression. Trailing link landing gear did great.
On our first approach, we slowed our descend to about 100fpm flaps t/o and let the mains touch down softly without taking out power and just felt how firm the ground was (keeping the nose off the ground)… it had rained a day earlier so we wanted to be sure it wasn’t soft. It felt super solid so we added power, went back around and did normal soft-field approach. The ground was hard, but the recent rain had helped reduce all the dust — which was awesome!
IBEX from above…
Sam Davis has been one of my flight instructors from the beginning. Great guys to have along on my first off-field landing.

If we would’ve planned for it I would’ve put my GoPros on and filmed it… guess we gotta go back again!

Re: Off-Field Landing, IBEX, UT
The word "intentional" somewhere in the title would have been helpful! what a great adventure.
