Flying to Kanab UT for a Greyhound Gathering (Part 2 of 2)
Nonstop or Fuel Stop? Last week Cindy, our 3 pups, and I had a lovely nonstop flight up to beautiful southwest Utah. For our return flight home to Santa Barbara, the forecast winds just keep strengthening, especially in the western Mojave… 30 knots and more… plus an AIRMET for turbulence. Welcome aboard! I had a similar experience today on an Angel Flight from SC to VA. We got caught in what I believe was a mountain wave (on the leeward side of the Appalachians around 30miles away). Had to add full power and nose up to 80 knots at 7000 just to maintain altitude. Descending to land we were seeing 1000+ fpm with only moderate pitch, which fortunately I was able to arrest. Lots of pilot reports and PIREPs of others experiencing the same thing. Glad to be flying the Diamond with its low stall speed even though the ride was rough in the turbulence. Interestingly, my infant passenger slept through the whole thing.

Bernie, thanks for checking out my flight, and the very pertinent conditions you saw on your flight today. A strong headwind by itself isn't an issue, but that wind most often brings with it (especially in mountainous and desert terrain) big up- and down-drafts. As you found, all we can do is pitch for a KIAS above stall, be patient, and make certain we have an out.
Thanks!
Wayne

Thanks, Arthur! It did get a bit bumpy.
BTW -- I'm finally getting to work videos from our August Alaska trip, and today edited a leg Kelowna to Ketchikan... and flew over CYKA (in the clouds ).
