Every time I tried it I seemed to get an 'Avgas shower'.

Same here. I have always affectionately referred to it as the "fuel draining device" when someone asks about it!

Just for an unrelated giggle, the recent models of C-172 and 182 have a total of 13 drain valves and the preflight checklist says to drain a "cup" of fuel from each and every one. Riiight :D

The measuring device for “alternative means for fuel quantity indication”, received with my new DA62 two weeks ago, has a plastic tube fitted.

Its usually hidden in the secret store below the baggage bay floor.

Has anyone tried (and had success with) the Sporty's "Universal Fuel Gauge"? https://www.sportys.com/pilotshop/unive ... 11-in.html

I've used it a couple of times. the one thing it does well is to get your shirt flooded with avgas then inserting the probe into the drain. It does however give you a pretty accurate reading.

I wouldn't expect it to work accurately on a DA40, since it only would read the quantity in the outermost tank (and not even all of that, because of wing dihedral and the location of the fill port). Since the Diamond gauge reads at the lowest point of the tank assembly in each wing, it will be fairly accurate.

Exactly the reason for the Diamond device. The filler caps are nowhere near the point where a vertical probe would work unless the tanks were full, whether one of those universal glass straws or the thin wooden dowel with markings many pilots of other aircraft make for themselves.

Is the Fuel Quantity Measuring Device required to be onboard even though no one really uses it?
