So the RF guys in our satellite company are not optimistic. A quarter-wave monopole antenna like our standard fin-shaped transponder antennas mounted on a grounding plane will radiate almost entirely downward. The radiation pattern looks like a flattened torus (flat along the base plane of the antenna) with zero radiation on a perfect vertical.

I wonder if we could simply put an omnidirectional antenna in the tail... I'll ask my avionics guy.

FlightRadar24 also give free access to thier top level plan if you contribute data, they will even send you a receiver if you are somewhere they have a coverage blackspot, https://www.flightradar24.com/apply-for-receiver
