I've got about 500 hours in DA20's, and I don't grease every landing, so I wouldn't fret too much about that. Your instructor is probably trying to make sure you don't fail your checkride. If you approach too slowly, and the DE thinks you may stall it, that's most likely an instant fail.
I shoot for 65 on final, and 60 over the numbers. If I want a short field landing, I subtract 5 knots. If it is gusty, I add 5 knots.

Happy to see this discussion as I'm struggling with landings too. 55 KIAS sounds good.. I will try it. My CFI also recommended we try it. But I then thought - what about the power setting? Do you have to add power? One of the other posts on this thread said you may need as much as 2100 RPM. My CFI likes to cut to idle. Which is best for a 18 hour student? Definitely worried about sinking too fast when I level off.

While making a normal landing, come it at 60-65kts and level-off a few feet off the ground, pull the power and relax into ground effect. Don't fret about my 2100 RPM comment, that was just to ARREST a high sink rate.

Turning final at 65 kts, reducing to 60 kts on final and then 55 kts on short final worked fine for me.
If there was a gusty wind I added about 1/2 of the gust factor.
Teaching you to land hot rather than using book or close to book numbers is doing you a disservice.
I suggest that you go over the CFI's head if you can't get him to make the adjustment.
Regarding the MT prop, which I purchased and had installed on my C1, I am unaware of any reversion to the lower MTOW when it is in use.
Could the MT verbiage suggest that no ADDITIONAL weight is granted above and beyond the already increased amount?
If anyone here has an MT and believes that their MTOW must revert to the lower number and finds that to be undesireable, a Sensenich prop can be easily found and installed.
