My friend and former neighbor Mike Cerre was a Marine forward artillery spotter in Vietnam before his career as a journalist. He was later an embedded reporter with Marines in the invasion of Iraq. He came by for a visit last weekend and shared an interview he did that I think you’ll enjoy.
At the Marines Memorial club in San Francisco he interviewed the air boss and pilot who did the actual flying in Top Gun Maverick. Virtually all the flying scenes are real, not special effects. The story of how that happened unfolds in the interview, including how they modified the stick in an F-18 to make it “easier” to fly at 100’.
