We made our first visit to Iceland last September. The 2022 eruption ended a few weeks before we got there, but we did have fabulous VFR weather for an aerial tour with a local pilot. The first image is of the south coast near Vik. The green cone in the second image is Maelifell, and the last two show a portion of both the 2021 and 2022 lava flows.

I did see a couple of DA40s practicing in the circuit at an airfield east of Reykjavik.

Beautiful aerial pics Steve. A few aerial shots from previous C172 flights attached, both summer and winter. If you get the chance again, you definitely want to fly up over Snaefellness (massive dormant volcano) and the Northwest Fjords

Also, Vik is gorgeous. It is commonly referred to as a black sand beach, a more accurate description might be black pebbles, picture below with basalt columns in background.
