Paid $21,500 for my two blade hartzell 6 mobtha ago. I guess $24k is a deal for one more blade - lol
All prop prices have skyrocketed.

When I read this I wondered was why... looks like the improvements are very very close to noise.

I suspect mostly brand preference based on Hartzell service & support for North American customers. An OEM option for new planes would more sense than Top Prop replacement because many DA40NGs are relatively new. The difference in the composite approach also makes certain kinds of blade chip repairs easier to perform.

Hopefully the Hartzell paint job would not chip away as what happened on my MT prop. I had it retouched once and then repainted at 600 hours.

In my experience of operating 3-bladed MT props on a DA40, DA42-VI, and DA62, I found they're quite susceptible to damage, including chipping of their their paint and composite coverings (over the wood core), and dents in the metal leading edges. Perhaps a Hartzell prop will be more durable?

I would expect that Diamond might eventually give new DA40NG customers a choice of props, with the Hartzell prop to become an extra-cost option -- as they did with Lycoming DA40s.

I have brand preference for Hartzell over MT, partly for the illogical reason of having shared roots in their hometown of Piqua, OH but also because of an impression that the Hartzell composite prop is more durable. Maybe this new prop will be approved for DA42s.

Can't speak to the DA42 or -62 (out of my price range), but I have co-owned two DA40-180's. One had the three bladed MT and the other, the larger diameter two bladed, wide chord composite Hartzell.

Operating off our reasonably well maintained grass strip, the MT was much less damage tolerant than the Hartzell. The nickle leading edge of the Hartzell held up much better than the MT. The Hartzell also pulled better off the runway (better static and low speed thrust) and the big flat blades helped slow the plane down for landing when needed. Can't really compare top speeds since the newer plane had smaller wheel pants (carbon fiber) versus the large fiberglass pants on the earlier plane. As an aside - the fiberglass pants were much more durable than the lighter carbon fiber pants, though.

I was so impressed with the Hartzell, that I put a similar prop on our RV-7A and bought a three bladed version (basically a Cirrus prop) for our new RV-10. The RV-7A prop has been in service for four years now and still looks like new. The RV-10 just started flying.

I thought the overhaul for my MTV-12-B was expensive, but it looks like I can get 3-4 overhauls for the cost of a new prop. The weight of the MTV-12-B is better for the pre-G1000 Lycoming planes and it is compatible with the Powerflow exhaust. I feel better now.
