Re: TKS Fluid
Is that all that is in there? I always figured there was some sort of agent to make it sticky and soapy. It seems to just hang on to the wings for a long time even in flight, and if the plane lands with a little bit still on the wings, then it will still be there a few days later. There must be some sort of extra secret sauce additive to make it do that. Or is it just as you said, just 3 ingredients.robert63 wrote:TKS is a de-icing fluid composed of ethylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol and distilled water.
Specification DTD.406B requires the product to have the following approximate composition:
Ethanediol (BS.2537) 85% volume
Isopropanol (BS.1595) 5% volume
Distilled water 10% volume
If you buy the components in drums then the price is approx. € 1,35 per liter or € 5.20 per USG.
In the original drums it is extremely pure and clean.

Re: TKS Fluid
Has anyone tried to purchase the separate ingredients and tried to mix? It does not seem to be significantly cheaper to do it this way unless you mix it in 300 gallon increments. It's the shipping costs that get you.

Re: TKS Fluid
Phil, not sure if the savings will outweigh the headache. Economies of scale on TKS fluid from a chemical company sort of stops at the 55 gallon barrel. You only save another $1/gallon or so stepping up to a 250 gallon container.
One thing to add--I use this pump in the 55 gallon barrel as a step up from the tiny hand pump (maybe 1 gpm?) that Express Chem included with the barrel. It's much quicker/cleaner and avoids the corrosion issues with a metal pump.

Re: TKS Fluid
You can save $50 on your first 55 gallon drum of TKS fluid from Accuchem by first obtaining a coupon here: https://www.tksfluid.com/. That brings the price down to $10.44 per gallon ($11.74 including tax and shipping).
You may find more convenient handling and dispensing than the pump that Neema recommends using a tilting/dispensing cart. In addition to the cart, you will need:
2 valves, one to dispense, one to vent: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006W ... UTF8&psc=1
1 fine thread 2" Bung Cap 2" with 3/4" Knock Out with Gasket for Poly Drum. The fine thread cap on the drum I received was not threaded for a 3/4" valve (but the course threaded cap was):

1 bung wrench:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0095 ... UTF8&psc=1
A socket extension and mallet work well to knock out the holes in the caps for the 3/4" valves. Wrap the valves with a couple layers of teflon tape: You'll need to dispense the first 10 gallons or so in the tilted position of the cart - enough to bring the fluid level below the vent valve when in the horizontal position: Dispensing is quick, clean, and easy in the horizontal position. Filling the reservoir goes cleaner and easier if you do not fill 2 1/2 gallon jugs above the 2 gallon mark:

@ultraturtle: do you recall where you got that tilting dolly? I like the looks of the larger wheels, but haven't found anything similar on Amazon.ultraturtle wrote: ↑Sun Dec 24, 2017 5:27 pm

Not currently available on Amazon where I got it, but you might find it elsewhere by searching for it by model number: http://www.milwaukeehandtrucks.com/deta ... &x=37&y=23photoSteveZ wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 8:59 pm@ultraturtle: do you recall where you got that tilting dolly?

Re: TKS Fluid
Found it, thanks, but I also found a very similar dolly on Uline at less than half the price.
