ADS-B not transmitting

Post by dwurfel »

Yesterday I was flying from CO to NV with Flight Following and around the four corners ARTCC said i was lost from radar and they would pick me up about 50 miles west. I asked them now with ADS-B wouldn't ATC be able to track me with out radar. No reply fro about 15 seconds then ATC came back and said I was not transmitting an ADS-B signal.

I have done the in air checks before and my ADS-B was working.

Has anyone else had the same issue. I may try to fly into KLAS Bravo air space and see what they say and go through the in air testing protocol as well.
Does anyone know of a way to check this on the ground without going to an avionic shop.

As always thanks. :bow

I know FF will tell me what it's getting from my transponder. And the KT74 will show "GND" when stationary or slow, switch to ALT on takeoff and there's a kind of symbol (looks like a wifi symbol) that flashes every few seconds.

Also hit the ADS-B testing website and see what it says about that flight.

Rich, went on the testing website and I think it is telling me my ADS-B is working. It is not an easy read. I wish it gave a summary that was color coded or gave a summary thumbs up or thumbs down that it is working in parameters. Thanks so much.

Found a pretty good users guide for the Public ADS-B Performance Report and from all indications my ADS-B was working within parameters. There are no red indicators whatsoever. So maybe ATC is not yet attuned to ADS-B. I would love to send the report to anyone that knows this report well to see if they agree with my review. Thanks so much.

I grab a test report every so often. How about posting your report here? What you're looking for is lots and lots of zeros.

Two days ago using flight following with Oakland Center in the area of KCIC and KRDD, another plane asked ATC to confirm their ADSB. The controller responded that they didn’t have ADSB equipment yet. Maybe the FAA overstated the successful completion of their ADSB project.

I suspect you're right. The missive they put out seemed to be referring to airports. I'm guessing centers may not yet be fully hooked in. Which is silly. All those towers scattered around the country and the controllers can't use the data?

On Thursday flying SMO to PSP SoCal told me Palm Springs had a radar outage and was only providing flight following if you had ADS-B. I said that was fine and they followed me all the way in. I have to say that the Jan 1 deadline did seem to add a LOT of tagged traffic to my MFD and I like knowing who they are talking to. (Before I was guessing a lot of the time.)

Yes! I also like being able to see who they're talking to.

I've been trying to promote among the local owners at least get/use ADS-B in if they're not yet ADS-B out equipped. If I don't pick them up at least they could pick me up. You actually don't even need an electrical system to do this.

The swarm of airplanes around here (Redmond, Bend, Madras, Prineville, DSD VOR and several practice areas) is amazing until you're accustomed. Yesterday morning, picking up my plane (with my new gizmo) from Bend to Prineville we had kind of a banana-belt of windy yet good VFR surrounded by snowy, low-cloud weather. Easily 20 targets on the FF flying around practicing this and that, swarming like starlings, it seemed. On good weather days, this is the normal state of affairs.

I was chatting with our airport manager a couple of days ago. He has ADS-B in (his "out" equipment sitting in its box, not yet installed) and was effusive how helpful it is.
