Rick, My elected officials have been frank in noting that they don''t see much that they could do. I think they are right. The problem is restricted to a few small aircraft GA pilots who belong to a group that the feds view mostly as a national security risk. This is not an issue that resonates inside the Beltway. Think of it as similar to a guy who collects gold Rolex watches complaining about the price of replacement crystals.
When possible, my preferred solution is to place the issue in the market. This solution isn't certified (yet) but looks promising for installations. http://www.pilotshop.com/catalog/avpage ... -15205.php
By the way, have you spoken with AOPA to see where they are on this issue?

Didn't speak to AOPA, but researched and found that they are in favor ADS-B but are pushing for lower costs for the system.

AOPA is great on the phone. Worth a conversation IMO. Also a call to the non-certified solutions to learn their plans.

Data point for those still shopping who don't have the G1000.
I went with the Lynx transponder. It was more expensive than the Appareo by about $3,000, but I have a bad habit of pulling my iPad out of my bag to find that the battery is dead for the return flight because I had the screen blackout disabled for flight. Having the screen to display traffic and weather information there in the panel was worth the money for me.
As an all-in-one solution, it's been great. WAAS source (My 430s are non-waas, as my aging Avidyne panel cannot be upgraded to work with WAAS radios), wifi for all the major iPad aps, and of course the fairly full-featured display right there in the panel. Especially since neither my MFD nor presumably my 430s will be able to display this data.
I worked with my shop to pull the coax and stuff like that which cut down on costs a bit.

For the $3,000 difference you could have also installed USB ship power and bought a couple spare iPads.

Hah, yeah.If you don't care about having the display in the panel, the Appareo is definitely killer.
I don't know about their USB thing, though. It's nice and has paperwork and all.. but I can't be the only one that uses the 'cigarette lighter' plug with a $10 USB plug?

The fuse for the cigarette lighter is behind the glare shield. I had it blow twice. That's not what I am looking for. And it is placarded "ground use only," probably in part for how it is wired in there. So I was very happy to be off of it. I used the TruBlue Power or whatever they are called, not the Appareo units (which also look fine).

Can someone confirm the model number for this combo antenna? I can't find a reference to it anywhere. List price? The model numbers for Garmin's antennas are GA 35, 36 and 37. The combo unit is GA 37 and Garmin wants $550 for it. Since the GDL 82 appears to come with the GA 35 ($352) maybe your avionics guy might be able to get Garmin to swap it out and give credit for the GA 35, but knowing Garmin I wouldn't bet on it.

Thanks Rick - but the GA 37 looks like my externally mounted antennas? Can it be mounted inside the tailcone to avoid drilling holes in the fuselage?ricksigler wrote:Dan,
