G1000 MFD AUX Video In connection

Post by Oshkosh99 »

Hello,

not sure if this question is ok here or better in another forum.

I have a DA42NG, and on the private airstrip I plan to fly to this summer (and then possibly keep the DA42 there) taxiways are very narrow, 50ft at best, so around 3ft each side and then trees, hills and retaining walls. My "stereo" vision is not the best, so a little distraction and the trees might get too close.

I'm sure many of you have heard of the "scaled wings P51 Mustang. One of it's many interesting features is that they have a taxi camera in the front wheel well connected to the G3X to aid in taxiing. This is exactly what I would love to have in my DA42. I could paint dots on the road used as a taxiway to mark the center of the 50ft and just keep the front wheel spot on.

Our DA42NG has WAAS and the software version GDU15. In the associated G1000 Pilot’s Guide 190-00962-04A I find a reference to an Aux Video input and there are even several pages on how to show video in the Aux Pages, zoom in and out etc., but no mention of what connector, what type camera, what camera resolution etc is required.

Has anyone ever connected a camera to the G1000? Any insights as to hardware, video cable, etc? And I guess no-one has an STC for this?

Thanks

Joe

Hello Joe,

I got an big experience in VIDEO feature usage in legacy G500/G600 and new TXi systems.

I have collected all the necessary technical information about the implementation of the VIDEO function for the G1000 system.
Unfortunately, I was unable to fully implement the project due to the war in Ukraine.

I will be happy to share the information with you.

Regards,
Bogdan

2. What type of camera to use?

from GDU 104X Installation Manual, P/N 190-00303-01 we learn that:

the GDU 104X supports the following composite video input formats:
• NTSC “National Television Standards Committee” (J,M,4.43)
• PAL “Phase Alternating Line” (B,D,G,H,I,M,N,Nc,60)
• SECAM “Sequential Color with Memory” (B,D,G,K,K1,L)

Composite video is a one-wire format with intensity, color, and timing information transferred together.
Video signals are transferred using a 75 ohm coaxial cable, see Table 3-3 for approved types of coaxial
cable.

NTSC (M), also called RS-170A, is the most common video format supported by the GDU 104X.

NTSC has the following characteristics:
• 59.94 Hz vertical interlaced refresh rate
• 15.75 kHz horizontal line frequency
• 525 scan lines
• 29.97 frame per second update rate
• Luminance or luma (black and white) also called “monochrome NTSC” or RS-170, is the standard black and white format which contains both image and timing information.
• Chrominance or chroma (color) encoding system

From my experience:

Automobile cameras - are the best choice
Inexpensively, provide good wideangle picture, designed for outdoor installation, works great in poor lighting conditions
