Re: fuel sensor

Post by Harry Range »

Just returned from a long x-country and while underway my left fuel reading went blank. Just a big red X through the entire left display. I was not concerned about fuel management but was worried this might be expensive. Is the sensor inside the tank the only possible issue ? I was hoping it might be something cheaper !! In any event the next leg of the flight the sensor worked fine again. I'm hoping it won't re-occur but these things tend to.

There's a good possibility of water or debris shorting it out. Not much you can do about that other than hope it flushes out on its own

DA40 fuel tanks have both fuel tank probes (that measure volume of fuel in the inboard chamber and long range chamber, if installed) and fuel tank sensors (that activate a ‘low fuel’ caution on the annunciation panel when the fuel quantity is below ~3 gallons).

From serial number 40.055, the fuel tank probes are 240 mm (9.4 inches) long and require wing removal for removal/replacement. Fuel tank sensors are stubby bolt-like sensors that can be removed/replaced through the inboard access panel for the fuel tank. See 28-40-00 of the AMM.
