DA42/62 Electrical failure

Post by Boatguy »

In the event of a total electrical failure in the DA42/62, the AFM and checklists advise that the gear may "slowly extend" and it may be necessary to use the manual gear extension. In that situation, how do you know if the gear is down and locked? There will be no three green.

Wiggle the wings pretty good a few times and hope?

You won't know, but it's extremely unlikely they won't lock. Instead of wiggling the wings, slip the airplane left and right with the rudder. That's what you want to really lock the main gear.

I find it a bit strange that the POH doesn't have very detailed instructions for manual gear instructions. As in the Germans have very accurate performance tables for every conceivable weight and altitude, vs the old very inaccurate performance chart I reference for my Bonanza G36 where you get dizzy following the lines. The G36 says 50 counter clockwise turns on the manual gear crank and it's locked in. Is there no such reference for the DA62? You can tell I haven't read that part of the POH.

The DA62 gear is very simple. It’s held up by hydraulic pressure, with the pump running every so often. That’s why it needs electricity to stay up.

If you pull the emergency lever, it releases all the hydraulic pressure and the gear falls and locks. That’s it.
