Hello Salim

Actually I didn't see it in a Service Bulletin. The GIA63W is included in the Authorized Equipment List (page 6-23) of the AFM for the DA42 w/GFC 700. This means WAAS operation is covered by either the TC or a STC. No mention of the 63W in the AFM equipment list for DA42 w/KAP 140. There probably is a service bulletin covering installation as there is for the DA40 and DA42 NG.

Nick, I think there was never a production DA42-TDI built with a KAP140-GIA63W combination, so it's not covered by the type certificate. The production airplanes with WAAS all had either no AP or the GFC700.

Upgrading from the KAP140-GIA63 to WAAS currently requires the Urbe STC. The Urbe STC requires the GIA63W with a part number that ends in -01, not the -20. The Garmin software version that is part of the STC specifically looks for the -01 and will not work with a -20 GIA63W.

Diamond and Garmin are working on a new solution (Service Bulletin) for the DA42-TDI planes that have a KAP140. This solution will also work with the -20 version of the GIA63W. This is what Emir is referring to. The SW associated with that solution is planned to be compatible with both the -01 and -20 version of the GIA63W.

Assuming your salvage -01 units' paperwork is acceptable, your current choices are to pay for the Urbe STC or wait until Diamond and Garmin develop & certify their work.

Sounds like many DA42s are being routinely fitted in North and South America and Australia without the URBE EASA STC. I would like to see what the paperwork looks like for these mods.

I have upgraded the GIA63W into my TDI KAP 140 plane without the URBE STC.
The installation of the units itself is approved by Diamond - only the SB is outstanding (at least for EASA aircrafts as far as I understand). The SBAS functionality is not allowed until the official SB is released by Diamond, Austria and needs to be switched off in the AUX system page.

According to information’s from my maintenance center the release of the SB will be January 2021.
The KAP140 fly’s the GPS approaches very well – the indicated glideslope is same as with an ILS.

Just a quick update: we're waiting for DAI's official dates for releasing their SB which will cover all versions of GIA63W (currently only -01 can be installed) and will be accompanied with GDU upgrade to ver. 15.

GDU 15 will be the last software upgrade for DA42 TDI. No other upgrades (HW or SW) will be released by DAI except already existing autopilot upgrade (GFC700 instead of KAP140) in DAI factories. However, the upgrade of DA42 TDI to G1000 NXi will not be released. So the final state of avionics for DA42 can be legacy G1000 with WAAS (GIA63W) or without it (GIA63) and KAP140 or GFC700 powered with GDU 15. For anything above you'll have to exchange the engines to AE300.

Diamond plans to address the Legacy WAAS certification and GIA63W part number restrictions for DA42-TDI models in a software upgrade targeted for late 2021.

Just want to revive this thread to make sure everyone who is interested knows that, it the US, Diamond has released OSB 42-145 that now allows upgrade of the legacy G1000s to WAAS (SBAS). It allows either the -01 or -20 units. I have already tracked down and ordered a couple of units and they should be here soon. I am very excited!
