Exhaust Fumes

Post by Daneshgari »

Hello All:

Has anyone noticed exhaust fume smell during the flight in DA42. Last few times during the flight I smell exhaust gas fumes in the cockpit. I noticed this every time the alternate air has been left open during to rain or snow flights. Is there anything I can do about this situation? When I close the alternate air it goes away.

Thanks

Perry

Hi Tommy, thank you for pointing out the obvious. One is borne every day. My point is that, is it normal for the exhaust fumes to come in when the alternate air is open. Or do i have a problem with my plane.

Thanks Perry

I'm certainly not an expert on the DA42, but I cannot understand how anything in the alternate air system would affect the cabin air. They are completely different systems with no connection whatsoever.

Thanks Steve. I am in contact with them. The master mechanic is helping me diagnose it. It may be fuel leak. I have to see if it comes in with or without heat on.

Hello All:

Progrèss report. I did few tests that the Service GM suggested. Flew with open and closed, alternate air, cabin heat and defrost heat alternatively. It established that for one think it is actually fuel fumes and it comes in with cabin heat on. Also, prior to flight yesterday I noticed that the right quick drain is dripping fuel. Once I explained this to Ted. He explained what is potentially happening. The air is scooped from right side of the right engine for the cabin heat. (See drawing below). My next action is to make sure that the fuel leak from the quick drain is taken care of and will see how that works regarding the fumes.

Not sure how to copy and paste the drawing here. It is on page 438 of the DA42NG maintenance manual.

Pretty sure I have posted about this elsewhere. It is an annoyance to me that the way the fuel runs down the wing from overflow and quick drains seems to get it in a position to be whipped into the fresh air intake (and other air intakes which must be used for heating). So when the line personnel overfill or spill, I wind up getting a cabin full of diesel smell for the beginning of the flight.

I now carry a can of orange mist air freshener (typical used in bathrooms). When the fuel has been spilled I spray a bunch around the fresh air inlet. I then get an orange orchard in the cabin instead of a fuel depot.

Thank you Colin. That seems to be a major design flaw. I am still trying various things. I will pay more attention about the overflow as well. Where abouts do you spry the air freshener?

Thanks
