ADS-B for G1000/TDI/KAP 140
Are any products available to retrofit ADS on a conventional DA42 TDI, or is Diamond proposing to stiff us on this upgrade as well as WAAS and GDR 56?

Re: ADS-B for G1000/TDI/KAP 140
It's Garmin and Diamond that's stiffing us on price and functionality. For the KAP140, Non-WAAS DA42 it's a new antenna, and a Garmin GTX345R with the WAAS GPS built in. That will make 3 independent GPS systems in the aircraft. Diamond will not support a software upgrade on the G1000 platforms that are non-Austro so the $5000 unit will only display traffic but not weather on the G1000. It does transmit weather to Garmin Pilot app (and I believe Foreflight) though.
I was quoted $12K for the total install. A friend of mine just upgraded his 2004 DA40 and Diamond even had issues installing and programming at the factory. Price for his DA40 was around $12K (although I hope that was CAD$).

I was quoted a price of $10,664.00 from Lancaster Avionics in Pa. That includes a Comant C-12580-200 Com Antenna (a combination GPS and COM antenna)the quote is a " not to exceed " price. Time is 4 to 7 working days. Lead time June/July 2017. The credit card price is $11,214.00

Had my DA42 TDI installed recently with a GTX-345R. The avionics shop was concerned the Bluetooth connection might not be suitable for use with an ipad running Garmin Pilot, so they also installed a Flight Stream 210 under the turtledeck. Something others might wish to consider as well. A well respected avionics shop found this installation more time-consuming than expected due to the relatively old software (version 9.05 / 2010) - my guess is other TDI owners are looking forward to the day Diamond catches up with Cirrus (version 15.x).

FYI: Diamond *HAS* caught up with Cirrus for Austro-powered DA42NG/-VI aircraft. Our DA42-VI is running the latest GDU Version 15.x. However even for us this may be end of the line for the original G1000 due to hardware processing and memory limitations. (The new G1000 NXi with much more capable hardware is launching with GDU Version 20.x.) So I wouldn't get your hopes up that there will be a new G1000 software version for nearly decade-old 2006-2008 DA42 TDI models.ScottSutton wrote:...looking forward to the day Diamond catches up with Cirrus (version 15.x).

Agreed Dave and I haven't been all that hopeful for quite some time. Worse yet, it will most likely be several more years before the really slick G1000 NXi becomes available for the current fleet of Diamonds. So TDI owners are caught in a technical black hole, that could well linger for the foreseeable future. . . It seems as if the TDI models have become the stepchildren of the fleet as seven years is an already long drought since the last software upgrade.
