DA42 BASF coolant

Post by N503TS »

Anyone know a source for the coolant for the DA42? Looks like it's a G48 coolant and I found that Zerex makes one with the G48 designation but still it's difficult to find a source online. The BASF coolant is almost impossible to find outside of Europe.

Zerex is what I used and the local hardware store on San Juan Island had it. That made me think it was pretty common.

Have you tried the BMW coolant? G48 is also specified for the Rotax powered A1 Katana's and I have used the BMW OEM coolant (probably made by Zerex) for years with no issues.

I would also check out the VW diesel OEM coolant. Unless something has changed, it was the correct specs for the 1.7 & 2.0L's and pretty easy to find.

The Diamond manual is not as clear as the Thielert maintenance manual. I was able to further review the last log entry that said it was filled with Zerex G05 ($12 premixed or $17 for dilution). I got a low coolant light when I started up this weekend but it went out at the increase in temp so we needed to top up the tank. I only had the POH at the time so after a quick Google found the G48 not as common to find. Lucky I went back and checked the manuals as there is a warning about mixing different types- I'm not sure of the science but I know if you mix some vehicle coolant types it will form a gel and stop flowing altogether. Does anyone know what a "silicate pouch" is?

The Thielert maintenance manual gives all the approved coolants:
Coolant.................. Water / radiator protection in a ratio of 50:50
Radiator protection............... BASF Glysantin Protect Plus / G48
Valvoline / Zerex Glysantin G48
BASF Glysantin Alu Protect / G30
Valvoline / Zerex Glysantin G30
BASF Glysantin Protect / G05
Valvoline / Zerex Glysantin G05
Mobil Antifreeze Extra (G48)
Comma Xstream Green - Concentrate (G48)

CAUTION: Glysantin G05, Glysantin G30 and Glysantin G48 must not be
mixed with each other.
CAUTION: Operation with Glysantin G05 or Glysantin G48 is only permitted
with silicate pouch.
CAUTION: Exchange between the coolants Glysantin G30 and Glysantin
G05 / Glysantin G48 is not permitted without an alteration of the
installation. Refer to IM-02-02.

Any Update on which coolant can I use on the Austro engine. BASF Glysantine G48 I cannot find it in USA. And Germany would not ship it to USA. I keep asking Diamond but they keep referring me to BASF.

Coolant for an Austro Engine is readily available in the US from any NAPA Auto Parts store: Zerex G48 Blue (for European cars)

You can even get it pre-mixed so you don't have to dilute it:

https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/ZRX859537

If your local NAPA Auto Parts store doesn't have it in stock, they can get it for you in about 2 days.

Thank you very much for the info. I found a supposed license in ebay, but did not trusted the brand (unknown).
