TKS Fluid

Post by N503TS »

Shopping for TKS Fluid for the plane. Did not see it posted here before but DW Davies was least expensive I could find with CAV Ice Protection next. I ended up purchasing the 4-1 gallon containers and picked up 12 gallons total. The shipping seems to add up on these from many suppliers with a hazardous fee applied on larger quantity containers. The nice thing about the DW Davies gallon containers is that the filling of the reservoir is very easy.
Some FBO's charge up to $90 per gallon for filling this so it heps to plan ahead.

We just bought a 55 gallon barrel of it from ExpressChem. Came out to $680 shipped with a little plastic pump. ~$12.36/gallon

I was looking for TKS Sustain (a lighter weight, non-petrochemical, biodegradable variety) but didn't have any luck. The manufacturer (Kilfrost) was sold to another company, Clariant, and they haven't responded to any email communication.

Make sure you filter the TKS before you put it in the plane. We have seen major problems with "crud" from TKS fluid that had been stored in metal barrels.

Will do. Thanks Cary

I think ours came in a plastic barrel but a filter is easy to throw into the mix.

Isn't there a filter on the fill spout into the tank?

Yes, but the crud we found got thru that filter. It is a pretty coarse filter. It didn't damage anything on our plane, but it has been known to damage the little pores the fluid seeps out from.

Hello Emir
Thank you posting Wittig URL. Interesting supply source. I had TKS fluid purchased in bulk from Aero-Sense /Belgium. Have to dig for the invoice but recall approx 7 €/ltr. May I ask how much you pay?

6€/ltr for smaller quantities (up to 100 ltr) with free delivery Germany to Croatia. But if you order 200 ltr or more, the price is almost halved. You can choose packaging between 5, 10, 20 ltr cans or drums.

I also just bought a 220L Drum from Witzig Chemie... Very cool price... Aerosense asks twice the money... Also ordered an electrical pump for the drum....
