Temporary ADS-B for DA40XLS
I'm helping transport a 2008 XLS that needs ADS-B to a new location. The immediate need is a quick and easy to install ADS-B good enough to fly 1,000 miles and then consider a better long term solution that integrates fully with his G1000. Is there a quick even if temporary solution? uAvionix SkyBeacon? There are no avionics shops nearby so the work will be done in hangar with an IA sign-off. Is this possible or do we need to consider a plan B?

Re: Temporary ADS-B for DA40XLS
A SkyBeacon would hardly be a trivial installation on a DA40, especially if it still has the original strobes installed. And there is no provision for a rear position light, so some kind of hack there, also.
The exemption route is worth a try, but there's no guarantee it'll be granted for a 1,000 mile flight.

Re: Temporary ADS-B for DA40XLS
I bought a 1946 Cessna 140 a year or so ago that had no ADS-B out. The airplane was located north of Chicago and I live south of Atlanta.
The waiver system mentioned a couple of posts ago worked great for me.

Where in the world are you going? From an land perspective, the majority of the country is not covered by ADS-B mandate.
You will only need exceptions if you climb above 10K and leave class G.
So all you are needing the exception for would potentially be the start/end of the flight.

Re: Temporary ADS-B for DA40XLS
I flew my DA40 from 1,250 miles from Minnesota to Florida and back without ADS-B. Simply had to detour around the Mode C rings of MSP, STL, and TPA. The only Class C I had to avoid was Cedar Rapids and Huntsville. Only added ~30 miles or so to the trip.
Prior to finally equiping with ADS-B, I have used the ADAPT system for waiver / deviation 3 times for very short fligths to Class D airports inside Mode C and under Bravo, and each time the approval was immediate.

Re: Temporary ADS-B for DA40XLS
I agree with Bruce.
An exception is really only needed if your route requires you to fly through a class C or class B (including the 30nm mode c veil) airspace or you need to go above 10K. ADSB is not required to fly in class G, class E under 10,000 ft or class D airspace.
This of course assumes you plan to stay out of class A airspace above 18,000 which seems pretty likely

Re: Temporary ADS-B for DA40XLS
Through or over class B or C. Class G is basically off the table. You can't really go anywhere without being at least in class E. And out in the Western States 10,000 is pretty inevitable.MarkA wrote: ↑Wed Oct 06, 2021 4:41 pm I agree with Bruce.

Re: Temporary ADS-B for DA40XLS
Thank you all for this information. It is looking more and more like I need to go the temporary exemption route. We have to depart northern Idaho and land at KFFZ (Falcon field, 14 NM east of Sky Harbor). There are a couple of small firewall mount ADS-B units that I'll investigate further but none look promising at first glance.

Re: Temporary ADS-B for DA40XLS
Personally, I would get the exemption. Six hours of flying, I'd fly
KEUL TWF LWL SPATS KELY ILC AVERS MMM L25 COWBY PGS APEMY PARKZ FERER KFFZ
You could get a little more direct depending on how you feel about MOAs and high terrain.
Phoenix has always been really friendly to me in little single engine flights in from the mountains. I feel like they get the anxiety the added risk produces and they work to get you over lower terrain as soon as they can.
Re-fueling depends on your tanks (all sorts) and winds, but I would expect Ely would be a decent option.
