New MSB40-091 for NLG inspection

Post by Rick »

It looks like Diamond released a new mandatory SB for a dye penetrant inspection of the NLG leg every 100 hours, even with the new (replacement) part.
For airplanes equipped with the D41-3223-10-00 nose landing gear leg, within the next 25 hours of operation if operated on unprepared surfaces, or within the next 100 hours of operation if operated on paved surfaces. Inspection must be repeated every 100 hours thereafter.

For airplanes equipped with the D41-3223-10-00_1 nose landing gear leg, and with a TTAF of 3000 hours or greater, within the next 25 hours of operation if operated on unprepared surfaces, or within the next 100 hours of operation if operated on paved surfaces. Inspection must be repeated every 100 hours thereafter.

The terminating action of this service bulletin is the installation of a D41-3223-10-00_2 or later nose landing gear leg.
In my case, my NLG leg was replaced back in 2009 with the then-new part number D41-3223-10-00_1, which terminated the need for these inspections. But this new SB says BOTH the old and new legs need the inspection, and there is a third NEWER leg, part number D41-3223-10-00_02, which is now a terminating action for this inspection.

Here is a link to the new SB.

I suspect this will cause the FAA to update AD 2009-10-04, which calls for inspections every 200 hours or 12 months, whichever is LATER -- http://support.diamond-air.at/fileadmin ... ection.pdf

Anyone know where to find the actual part number for the leg? Is there a visual difference to the designs?

Part numbers are in the MSB:

D41-3223-10-00 was the original leg
D41-3223-10-00_1 is the replacement leg from ~2009
D41-3223-10-00_2 is the new replacement leg cited in the latest MSB

I don't know if there are any visual differences between the different part numbers.

the _1 must be before 2006 or so, as the original MSB 40-046 for the inspection references the new part _1, and gives serial numbers affecting up to 40.643. As I am 40.696, and made in late 2006, I must have the _1 or later.

Steve, interesting that the original MSB -046 document from 2008 references both the _1 and _2 part numbers, so I guess the _2 leg is not that 'new'! This makes me wonder why they are now requiring inspections for the _1 leg, but not for the _2 leg, and what are the differences between these three parts?

The original MSB 046 (no revision) dates from 2005 and had no reference to an updated part number. It also allowed for initial inspection that did not require dye penetrant. I don't have a copy of rev. 1 (2007) of that SB, but rev. 3 (2008) does require dye penetrant and references -1 and any subsequent ones as being sufficient.

Now for the AD (2009). It requires complying with 046 rev 1 or 3 and also allows termination using -1 or subsequent part numbers.

Clear as mud, right? But technically this new MSB is not yet covered by an AD as far as I can tell.

The SBs are not even as clear as mud. They reference the -2 part, but give no hint on how to identify it or when they started installing it. The MSB 046 isn't even clear as to whether the -2 existed at the time or was simply given as an example of the future numbering system.

Anyone know when they started installed the -2 part?

Or how to tell if the part is on the plane?

Thanks

The part number is undoubtedly stamped/bonded on it - somewhere.

My only clue was in my logbook - back in 2009 there is an entry about replacing the nlg leg part # D41-3223-10-00 with a new leg part # D41-3223-10-00_1. I would hope the parts are marked somehow so people can tell...
