The chrome spinners on MT prop DA40s don't hold up for long -- the coating peels off after a few years.

Consequently we've given up on chrome and paint the spinners on used DA40s light gray to match the blades -- that's also consistent with the way that most new DA42-VI and DA62 aircraft MT prop spinners are delivered by Diamond. (New DA40NG spinners are white.)

If I found a solution, how many owners would consider to get their spinners refurbished to chrome? Today I found a shop that specializes in aerospace surfaces.

Last July I had MT in Deland, FL repaint my badly peeling spinner white. I know some paint shops claim to do it, but I wanted it done correctly. MT knows the glow spinner was an issue and they go out of their way to provide outstanding service to repair. They do not recommend restoring the glow finish on the composite material as it will just peel again. It was never chrome, and they say you can’t use actual chrome on a composite. They removed, stripped and repainted it white, and remounted it within a couple days while I enjoyed a Florida visit and watched a SpaceX launch from the coast. Beautiful job and MT only charged $200.

I found a solution that works for all composite Spinners. It’s not cheap as paint but it’s more Durable and you have options of different colors Including the ceramic coat.

Send me a pm

I vaguely remember two main manufacturers, cosmichrome and some other, spectra chrome maybe. MT originally did the latter and we tried the former.

MT’s seemed to last longer but would yellow over time. Ours didn’t adhere as well and would peel sooner from the edges, but even the MT version would peel around screws from overtightening or just years of r&r.

We had better luck when they were coated with a ceramic clear after, and a UV stabilizer helped with the additive, but I still wouldn’t expect more than five good years out of it. I ended up going the same route as Dave and just did a grey metallic.

Had mine painted silver a few years ago. I think it looks much better than the chrome!
