2008 DA40D Purchase Advice

Post by austropilot »

Hello,
what are the gotchas to watch out for regarding purchase and owning of a 2008 DA40D?

Serial number is mid 350s, TAE-125-02-99 Engine, MTV 6A prop.

Appreciate your help and now back to reading the forum up and down! Thanks!

If it doesn't have WAAS, you'll never get it. Diamond has no plans to update the G1000 software for the DA40D.

I should have mentioned: It is a non G1000 equipped plane.
Steam gauges with dual GNS430. I’ve see G500/GTNs being retro fitted to another DA40D, so it should be possible.

The DA40D (TDI) models have serial numbers starting with D4.### using a different sequence than the Lycoming birds.

Patrick,

If you have the 6 pack DA40, I think one “gotcha” you should watch out for is what has been the reliability of its KAP-140 auto-pilot.

Colin did a pretty major upgrade of his DA42 when he bought it, and replaced the KAP 140 with a GFC700. It's well north of $100K, but the only software that is certified for the G1000 in the DA40D is quite old and may not even support WAAS.

You could probably do much better with a few GI-275's, or G5, or GTN 750, etc. and a GFC700.

Six-pack airplane plane so considerably more options than a G1000 (i.e. minimal); depends on STCs and budget!

G500 and GTN650 is possible. Apparently the GFC500 is in the works.
