Squeezed out an extra knot of TAS

Post by Rich »

If course my plane doesn't have anything directly displaying True Airspeed. So I'm flying along, get what seems to be the stable airspeed. Enter the parameters into the GNS430 and it comes out to 145 kt. TAS OK, not bad.

I get home, enter the same parameters into an online TAS calculator and it comes up with 146 kt. (and a slightly higher DA, BTW).

I enter the parameters into my old AvStar flight calculator and get the same result as the online tool: 146 kt, and the same DA. Ah ha! 2 out of three :D

I've done this a few times and the 430 cheats me out of that 1 kt every time :x

Hello,

Can you tell me what to enter in the 430 to have TAS?
I only know the GS. For my TAS I only make my own calculation.

Right outer knob - two clicks to the right. This is the AUX chapter that includes setting date/time, etc. But the first page includes TAS, etc. Select it and enter the obvious parameters: CAS, altitude, baro setting and temperature. It'll give you TAS and DA.

You can also enter heading and it'll calculate wind direction and speed.

This is in the 430 manual chapter 9.

Thanks ! What is CAS? Indicated airspeed ?
About baro setting, if I fly in level I have to write 1013 and input the current flight level?

Why do I have to input direction? He has it already ?

ALT: what your altimeter reads.
CAS = calibrated airspeed. For the DA40 in cruise speed range, indicated/calibrated airspeed are effectively identical.
Baro setting: It's the setting that you put in your altimeter. The calculation internally corrects to pressure altitude.
You're putting in magnetic heading. The 430 does not know that. It does know GS and ground track.

For the indicated airspeed and the magnetic heading,
Our old instruments are not very accurate to read a precise value, isn’t it?
For altitude and baro setting it’s fine.

Arnaud - You have to use the local altimeter setting and you might have to use the InHG reading instead of the MB reading on your altimeter for the 430.

Hi Bernie,
If I fly level I set 1013 and the read altitude 8000 ft for FL080?
If I fly in altitude, I set QNH and read altitude?
Right ?

For the baro, is it not possible to input the set baro in MB?

You enter the altitude and baro setting from your altimeter. These 2 values are interrelated, regardless of the current local setting, assuming it's different. or you enter Pressure Altitude (AKA FL) and 1013. This is manually doing what the first option does for you.

There is an option in the setup1 page of the AUX chapter to use mb instead of in Hg. As well as other stuff. This is also in the manual.

Ok, ok, sorry for these questions. I know that this is related :).
I’m now on the manual.
Sorry again.
