You are right mine is a 2001! My bad. I didn't realize that the 2002's out of Canada had a smaller cockpit. Learn something new everyday.

Not sure why your installer said his IFD is not able to provide GPSSS roll steering to a KAP140 as it is possible. It requires an ACU that you purchase with the E5, but it works. There are many installations with this. Have him contact his Aspen customer rep and they can work it out.

It's not "my" installer. I'm using Leading Edge in Band. This comes from the shop my friend is using: AV-COM, now based in The Dalles, OR (though the airport itself is in Washington State).
2002 DA40-180: MT, PowerFlow, 530W/430W, KAP140, ext. baggage, 1090 ES out, 2646 MTOW, 40gal., Surefly, Flightstream 210, Orion 600 LED, XeVision, Aspen E5

I spoke with my friend again yesterday. Due to this belief that his IFD wouldn't provide GPSS roll steering to his A/P, they're going ahead with a dual G5 installation instead. Here's where it gets interesting. That footnote in the G5 AML that I have cited would seem to preclude installing a G5 in a DA40 used for IFR. But somehow, the shop was informed that it would not apply to 2002 DA40's, as Diamond only started putting the offending lightning protection in the DA40's in 2003. I happen to think this is totally wrong. As far as I know there has been no change in this area of the design. But at least it removes this paperwork obstacle. There was that bit about a change to the aileron counterweight that caused magnetometer problems. I don't know when that occurred but do know it's not in my plane.

Rich,

I confirmed with my field service engineers that installing an Aspen E5 with ACU to and IFD series GPS navigators will provide GPSS to KAP140 and many other autopilots. Their are several installs in the field today that do this so I am not sure why his dealer is telling him that. As far as the limitations on the G5 AML I cannot comment on their AML but there is no restriction on the Aspen AML

Thanks. The shop he's using is sort of in transition right now and that may be part of it. Fortunately for me, I have inside info on the Aspen :D

Leading Edge says they'll be back with a quote for the E5/installation today or Monday.

Thanks to John’s help, I’m going to be moving forward with my avionics install in January. I’m installing the legacy Aspen 2000 system paired with Avidyne radios and the Lynx transponder.

Will update along the way!

Got the E5 & installation quote back today, just over $11K. Pretty much what I expected. Looks like the latter part of January.

In researching all this stuff I came across something curious. The GNS units can accept various additional inputs via ARINC429 stream. This includes straight pressure altitude, baro-corrected altitude, and heading. It also appears that the Aspens could possible supply this info to the GNS units.

OK, but what would the GNS unit do with this data were it supplied?

Rich, Chip&Al,

I look forward to seeing pictures from both of your installs. If you have any issues along the way let me know.

I have asked the field engineers about the A429 data you referred to, and as soon as I find out the details I will post them.

Thanks,

John
