Re: New Nose Wheel Fin
Have the fin installed and ready to put on the wheel.
I had both sides of the wheel fairing taped together and put the fin on it in order to find the perfect spot for the installation. Once the location of the holes for the securing screws located, the rest was easy.

Re: New Nose Wheel Fin
FWIW I went down to Ace hardware and got slightly longer M5 SS button head screws so they matched the others. This enhances the appearance that the fin belongs there.yl472401 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 24, 2020 10:00 pm Have the fin installed and ready to put on the wheel.

Re: New Nose Wheel Fin
Thanks for the heads-up. Did you use any washer for surface protection?

Yep. Get compatible nylon washer such as are used for the others or reuse the ones from the screws you replace.yl472401 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 24, 2020 10:20 pm Thanks for the heads-up. Did you use any washer for surface protection?

Bret, I notice that this fin lacks that rather thick soft base strip that mine came with. Is there any reason I could not remove it? It would improve the appearance.

Re: New Nose Wheel Fin
I had the fin weeks ago and still waiting on my 2005 to be ready. Hoping to pick up next week. Does the wheel pant need to be removed to install this? I was (likely naively) thinking that it just went in the place of the screws that were already in place. Thanks for the total NOOB question.

Re: New Nose Wheel Fin
No need to remove the pant. I painted mine at home, and then it took me ten minutes at the hangar to install. A simple fix for a nagging problem.

Re: New Nose Wheel Fin
In the middle the night I realized that when mounting the fin "for real", the fairing must first be mounted, or at least in place, on the nosewheel. The very act of mounting the fin fastens the two halves together in which state it isn't possible to then mount it to the nose wheel arm.

Re: New Nose Wheel Fin
Lol, I took it off early due to concerns of damage to the wheel faring from improper towing by the facility and potential lateral factor from the cross wind as I was practicing as a student pilot. Getting ready to put it back on the wheel with the new fin.
Also, got a blown tyre two days right before the check ride. An afterthought was the lack of ability to check the landing gear tyre with the wheel fairing on. Any solution to this problem, Rich ?

Re: New Nose Wheel Fin
With the "fat" gear, enough of each tire is showing that I can visually and tactilely check the tires for adequate inflation. In case you doubt this can be done effectively, a couple of years ago I readily noticed when my right main tire was suddenly low. I put the plane up on jacks (which is what I do to pump up the tires) and couldn't find a puncture. It wasn't entirely flat, but down around 20 PSI. I pumped the tire up and it's been fine ever since. I never did figure out the cause. But the condition was readily apparent. I do have one of the brands of no-leak tube types on all the tires and they hold pressure amazingly well. The current tires/tubes are about 6 years old.yl472401 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 25, 2020 3:46 pm Lol, I took it off early due to concerns of damage to the wheel faring from improper towing by the facility and potential lateral factor from the cross wind as I was practicing as a student pilot.
