That can't be true. I don't even think a backup instrument that has the "same software" as the primary could even exist, it's not like the G5 or GI-275 are run on G1000-lite...

The SAM would be a bit more challenging to fit simply because of the fact that it doesn't just pop in a standard instrument hole like the others mentioned.

The -275 instruments are TSO'd for Diamonds and G1000 installations and they're quite spectacular. While the G5 was attractive at the time, it feels like a soon-to-be-orphan product given the new series and platform.

On the software side, there are many points of commonality across the products. The OS, drivers, math functions, other libraries, networking, firmware, etc. are all going to have common elements regardless of the product. It is the nature of the beast. The decision to not include the Diamonds and G1000s in the G5 TSO list was for business or other purposes.

The GI-275 with attitude, speed, altimeter looks to be about half the cost of the MD-302.

But the G5 has a nicer/larger square screen.

The DA20 is the only Diamond on the G5 AML.

The AML also explicitly excludes Cessna's and Piper's with a G1000. Nice unit, but not an option for most Diamond owners.

The DA40 variants are on the list, but then this stupid exclusion makes it moot:

VFR aircraft (without lightning protection per SB OSB 40-004/3) ONLY.

Nevertheless, I do know of DA40's with the G5 installed.

I have a G5 in mine - FSDO and my FAA Repair Station shop allowed it for a short while. They were also putting in Cirrus G1000 planes. FSDO later asked them to stop but said its OK to leave previously installed ones. I am thinking that putting a 275 to the left of my G5 would also be nice if U can synthetic vision at a good price (compared to the 10K for the G1000 unlock card). My logs show it as legally installed so I am not going to sweat it.

In a real life G1000 total failure I can tell you that the G5 is a much safer and easier to fly alternative with more data and features (like altitude and heading bugs, vertical speed, etc) than the old three mechanical backups. Same would be true of the 275. The SAM is not that great because it is still like having separate instruments - not as integrated as the display of the G1000/G5/275/etc. And if they all failed - my iPad using ForeFlight along with the AHRS in the Stratus 2 that I hung on to will give me everything I need plus synthetic vision.

I've so much redundancy for a small GA plane it is ridiculous.

So then we're in agreement? The G5 is not an option for most Diamond owners?

That brings us back to the MD302 or GI-275.

If I'm reading this correctly, with the internal ADC and AHRS, it's about $4,100 at Sarasota Avionics.

https://sarasotaavionics.com/avionics/gi-275-ai-adi

I also believe that the SVT license for the G1000 can be used for the GI-275. I agree that the GI-275, essentially a mini-PFD, is an easier transition from a failed G1000 ADC and/or AHRS that the factory round gauges. It's the display we're used to seeing, just much smaller!

SVT Unlock only 889 - less than a tenth of the G1000 SVT - yikes!

So much frustration here my head hurts.
