Ready to install these basically free batteries for the next biennium.

I did mine last year. Make sure you save the old ones for flashlights, etc. They work fine... I'm starting my annual next week. I don't have to replace those, but I do have to do the ones in the ELT RCPI and annunciator. I have a Duracell 28L and CR2 coming from that famous aircraft parts supply house - Amazon.

That's why they're free , except for the little bit of dielectric grease used. I put 'em all in a plastic bag and use them as needed. They still have years of shelf life.

You must have pre g1000 which have the ridiculously priced lithium batteries. Oh how I wish I had your setup. Much more sensible.

I replaced these yesterday and ran into a small hiccup. I put in all the new batteries and closed the assembly. But when I checked the voltage it was not the normal 45-ish volts but merely about 20 and flaky at that. So I opened it back up and found the stack pair at fault. (For those that are not familiar, there are 4 stacks of 7 AA's each, winding up connected in series.) I removed the batteries from both of those stacks (making doubly sure they had been inserted correctly) and then checked each of those 14 batteries. Every one showed 1.61 volts. I put them all back in, reassembled and wound up with the more expected 45.4 volts. Clearly something was interfering with proper contact within those 2 stacks.

Slightly off-topic, but...

I am doing my Annual, and one of the required maintenance items is replacing the Li-ion battery in my ACK E-04 ELT. This is the second replacement for me (so I guess I've had it about 10 years). The batteries are quite expensive (unlike the 8 Duracell D batteries that were required for the E-01 ELT). I saved the old batteries, and out of curiosity, measured their voltages. All three of them (the new one, the 5 year old one, and the ten year old one) read 12.13 volts unloaded. Of course, other than the annual function test, the batteries are unused...

Now, I just have to find a use for the replaced batteries. Maybe I can connect them in series and use them for a bench power supply for avionics testing...
