Folks-

A D-shackle plus a spring-loaded carabiner in stainless does a great job.

Do you leave the D-shackle attached in flight?

No. You just unscrew it and toss it in the baggage area along with my chocks.

Good point I should have added that.

That is exactly what I use.

Same here but I have noticed some silver-gray rub marks around the hole. Not sure if it is something that would buff out but I have purchased a rope shackle to try.

I was concerned about paint abrasions, so I place a fiber washer between each side of the “U” shackle and the fin. Takes a little longer to install the shackle, but the ventral fin still looks new.

OR maybe a piece of PU film transparent. This kind of film exists in automotive to prevent stone chipping on bonnet etc...

Try a climbing sling. Lighter, stronger and cheaper than a D-shackle. No potential damage to the fin, paint or tie down insert.
