Wheel noise

Post by astaib »

Hello,

After a flight on a very muddy airfield I washed my plane and wheel with high pressure karsher.

Since this (I guess) I have noise from the wheel (or bearing) when I land (high speed rolling).

Do you have an idea of what it can be?

Thanks!

Arnaud.

I can think of several things:

- Dirt trapped between the some brake disks and pads.
- You might have flushed the wheel bearing grease away from one of more bearings.
- Dirt clogging those rods in the brake calibers that permit them to float, causing a dragging brake.

You know this now but NEVER use high pressure water on your airplane.

Hard to tell based on the description "noise". Since it was just after a pressure wash one can only assume it's the bearings, but that could a a coincidence. Check your break lining wear and push the plane around to feel for drag.

My Da40 has some clicking noise from the right Main during taking off and taxi, but the noise will be diminished/gone whenever I press the right brake. Is this something that needs to be check out by a mechanic or a pilot for preventive work?

I would have a mechanic look at it. They can tick when pushing around at low speeds/start and stop from the brakes sticking but I’m not used to that happening at high speeds continuously. Sounds like the wheel nut might not be tightened all the way and the wheel has lateral play. If the clicking varies with speed it could be a warped rotor from overheating or being worn past limits.
