The New Garmin GI 275 Attitude Indicator (AI/ADI)
Finally it appears that there is a modern Garmin after market instrument that has been STC'd for the DA40.

Is that intended to be a primary instrument, as it’s shown with flight director chevron? Can it be used with a G1000?

Shows that it is compatible with the KAP140.
Wonder it it could be put in place of the standby AI and drive the KAP140 then remove the AI behind the PDF.

It shows that it will drive the KAP-140 assuming you have the right navigation source (which does not appear to include G1000). If you have a GPS 400/500/etc you're in good shape.
Beyond the 140 issue, anyone have a thought if it could replace the standby attitude indicator and altimeter for the G1000-equipped DA-40s? I don't see any of those pesky not-for-G1000 notes on the AML, etc. You could use the little VFR GPS antenna, add an additional magnetometer, add an additional OAT, and then you'd be far better set than what's available today with the steam gauges.
This device is really quite a nice little box. It is essentially an entire G1000 in a small form-factor that can be "ganged" together to provide 1, 2, 3, 4, or even 5 small displays that show much of the functionality today in the full panel systems. It will be a game-changer for a lot of airplanes. My old Decathlon, for example, would be a ton of fun with these things.
I read the installation and maintenance manual and could easily see how a very nice panel could be built for a lot of airplanes that had 90% of what we have with the G1000/G1000Nxi. For a fraction of the cost. These and an iPad ... not sure what else you would want.

Unfortunately, it's the turn coordinator that drives the KAP140, not the AI (the only Bendix King AP for which this is the case, all others are AI driven). What this AI would do is provide GPSS-like steering for lateral nav guidance. Looking at the documentation, I haven't seen anything that says it can't replace the standby indicators for the G1000, but obviously you'd want to confirm that with Garmin. The 4-in-1 GI 275 flight instrument is also approved for installation as a dedicated standby flight instrument to Garmin glass flight displays and is capable of serving as a back-up to a variety of third-party flight displays on the market.

The TC is required input for the 140 to determine roll rate. It's true the AI has no role. Just pointing out the prices on the Garmin website are all "Starting at ..."
Excluding the CDI (I'm still trying to figure out what its capabilities are), one of each would be "Starting at $16,780"

Exactly right.
For those who have the backup battery in the DA-40, the question then becomes one of whether this could replace those. Probably not. Usually these go at the end of a wing. The G1000 installations are, if I recall correctly, at the end of the right wing.
