uAvionix AV-30 EFIS
Does anyone know anything about this new all-in-one flight instrument from uAvionix? According to this info at Aircraft Spruce it will soon be "FAA-approved for installation in certified aircraft". It looks quite nice and includes a probe-less AoA indicator, G-force meter, and slip indicator, in addition to all the usual AI, airspeed, altimeter, temperature, OAT, etc. All for less than $2k. I wonder if it will be possible to install one in a DA40 one day? Does anyone have any inside info on this device?

It's on my list as a possibility. I asked some months back that they include the DA-40, at least us steam-gauge folks.

Since it says it will be FAA-certified as a primary instrument, I don't see why the FAA wouldn't allow it as a backup instrument in ANY aircraft. But then, it's the FAA... And, unlike Garmin's G5, I can't see any argument for NOT allowing it as a backup for the G1000. I guess time will tell...

I also was eyeing that to replace the backup AI. As far as I can tell we have to wait and see if Diamond is on the AML.

FWIW, I believe the OAT probe currently used by the Davtron is compatible with the AV-30. Were I to get one of these I might remove the Davtron display, also.

I too have emailed the manufacturer and asked whether the DA40 will be on the AML. I have even asked if I preordered am AV-30 would they return my investment if they did not include our Diamonds. Sadly, I have not heard anything back from the company.
Regardless, I remain very interested in both of their options.

Can it do a real AoA without a probe?

Re: uAvionix AV-30 EFIS
One theoretically can deduce AOA based on the various data it does have at its disposal for basic scenarios. The explanation is described on the site. I do remain skeptical for certain outlying conditions.

Re: uAvionix AV-30 EFIS
Pondering, pondering. Luckily there isn't major urgency for me, mostly a question of which way to go with replacement of my AI when it fails. Some interesting choices:
AV-30 - the cheapest unit (2K), but not by a lot anymore. And at least a few hundred to get it properly installed. The most extra stuff available. Not yet available for certified A/C, though long available for experimental.
Garmin G5 - the next cheapest (2.3K) I know some have gotten it installed in spite of the AML DA40 exclusion, but probably adds to the paperwork and also would be at least a few hundred to install.
RC Allen 2610 - The most expensive unit (2.6K). Nothing extra, just an AI. But simplest to install. Hardly more work than changing a light bulb. No paperwork hassle.
Then there's the AV-20. (0.9K) Does lots of the extra AV-30 stuff (like AOA, TAS, etc.) plus a teeny-tiny AI and replaces the Davcon. Somewhat simpler install than the AV-30 or G5. No paperwork hassles - approved for part 23 now.
