Tower - "Where are you?"
Enroute I use VOR's as practice and to monitor Waypoints I'm passing.
And I always shoot Instrument Approaches unless I'm at my home airport KFMN
So when you're shooting an approach
your PFD tracks distance to next waypoint on the approach
not the airport
and unless the airport has a VOR ( DME &Bearing)
I have to use the distance circles on the MFD to report distance and direction ...
But I'm sure I'm missing an easier and more accurate way..

Re: Tower - "Where are you?"
I just report my position with reference to the Navaid...
"Houston Approach, N432SC is 3 miles North of the Eagle Lake VOR".
Of course, my dinosaur has a DME...

Re: Tower - "Where are you?"
Assuming the destination airport was selected and the desired approach was activated, In the GNS units:
Hit the FPL (Flight Plan) button and the active flight plan waypoints are listed, including the destination airport. Assuming you haven't changed the default display, the current cumulative distance remaining to every waypoint in the flight plan is listed.
I'm guessing there is an equivalent function in the G1000.

Re: Tower - "Where are you?"
With the G1000 you can press the FPL button on the MFD and get a similar list - waypoints and cumulative time and distance to each.

Re: Tower - "Where are you?"
So that I know how to report distance from airport (esp for CTAF self reports)...
I simply press the NRST key on the PFD (G1000), which then keeps the distance to my airport (unless there are many many airports closer) right in my face on the PFD. If a CTAF airport, I then report at e.g. ~15 miles, 10 miles, 5 miles, and short final.
BTW --if shooting an approach at a CTAF airport, it is NOT a good idea to report positions relative to a Fix, as many VFR pilots in the area will have no idea of approach waypoints. Instead report... <airport> traffic, X miles, N/S/E/W, Y thousand feet, <intentions>, <airport>.

Re: Tower - "Where are you?"
I use the FPL on the MFD - great page and also shows step down altitudes! Almost don't need a plate.

NRST..... DUH
Ya obvious once u point it out
Ironic that I leave NRST UP enroute for emergencies
But it didnt occur to me to use on an approach

Re: Tower - "Where are you?"
Another thing that I use is OBS mode and CRS when I am approaching an airport and I want to know where I am relative to the final approach course. This is very helpful at a towered airport when the tower clears you to enter on a long base leg. By setting the CRS to the runway heading the course will center when you reach the final course.
