DX.X Waypoint added to approach

Post by Diamond_Dan »

The G1000 adds an extra waypoint on some approaches 2 miles before the IF. (D10.9 in the example photo) Does anyone know the reason for this? My only guess is that it's a 2 mile warning before grabbing the localizer. It seems to show for some approaches but not others.

I looked at the approach chart and noticed the intercept angle on the feeder route from PSH is 85°. Perhaps the additional waypoint is to help with turn anticipation using GPS before switching to green needles. It would be interesting to check this theory with the other approaches with similar additional waypoints.

Flying Like The Pros has a nice video segment on "Loading Approaches Gotchas" with the G1000. I like the entire series.

They also include a decoder slide the explains how Garmin code certain kinds of waypoints in the G1000 databases.
