Re: Path to ADS-B & WAAS for older DA40s
This may a bit off topic (or perhaps has been considered elsewhere): The idea of having 'certified WAAS' installed as part of the requirement for ADS-B out got me wondering if someday it would be possible (as in legal) to hand fly a WAAS approach using Foreflight or a similar app as the display. It's no longer a "handheld" as we have commonly used the term.

I have a 2005 non-WAAS G1000 in which I installed a GTX-345R last summer at a cost of around $9K.
Matt is correct that the weather will not display on the G1000, BUT it will display (via Bluetooth) on my tablet running Garmin Pilot.
As other have said in this and other forums, the ADS-B traffic is way nicer than I would have imaged and I wish I would have done it sooner.
While WAAS would be nice, for the type of flying I do (mostly VFR and light IFR) WAAS adds no real value.

Tim, you aren’t terribly far from me. What shop did you have your work done at? I’m looking for a reliable shop who has done a DA40 before.

Simply receiving and using a WAAS-resolved position isn't enough. There's a lot that would have to be processed for it to be usable for sole navigation. In the case you imply, the various requirements for built-in FDE/RAIM come immediately to mind. Check out TSO-C146a and b and other references.chili4way wrote: ↑Thu Jan 24, 2019 3:38 am This may a bit off topic (or perhaps has been considered elsewhere): The idea of having 'certified WAAS' installed as part of the requirement for ADS-B out got me wondering if someday it would be possible (as in legal) to hand fly a WAAS approach using Foreflight or a similar app as the display. Re: Path to ADS-B & WAAS for older DA40s
I have a 2002 six pack with WAAS 530/430s.
Six weeks ago I had the GTX345 installed with the FlightStream 210 for about $8,500 cash. While I am very pleased to have the ADS-B In/Out capabilities the Flightstream 210 is very much worth the roughly 950 of this bill. I completed my OFR in Cirrus SR20/22s with the G1000 and I really enjoyed using their data entry keyboard. But I wanted to own a DA40 and I thought I would just have to live without a keyboard. Well, the Flightstream just makes the keyboard obsolete.
While the plane was in the shop I also elected to upgrade the legacy ELT.
And for mhoran ..... I Used Lancaster Avionics and was quite happy with their work and customer service.

Re: Path to ADS-B & WAAS for older DA40s
For a DA-20? That seems rather absurd for "just" a GTX-345R or equivalent. I did my DA-40 with G1000 for around 40% less last year at Vista at Whiteman here in LA.francismolloy wrote: ↑Sat Feb 02, 2019 3:52 am I was just quoted $14k for Adsb upgrade in El Paso, anyone get better quotes out here in the west, I’m in Southern Arizona

Try Advanced AeroTechnologies Group, LLC at KGXY.
info@advancedaerotech.com
I’m having mine done there in about a week and the quote seems better than El Paso. It may be too far away. KGXY is a bit north of Denver.

Just for the additional information, what was the solution they were proposing? I know the L3 stuff has serious price tags.francismolloy wrote: ↑Sat Feb 02, 2019 3:52 am I was just quoted $14k for Adsb upgrade in El Paso, anyone get better quotes out here in the west, I’m in Southern Arizona
