Disposition of the 6 fundamental instruments
Hello,
Does anybody knows if the disposition of the 6 basics instruments (vario, altimeter, tachometer...) is ruled by the FAA or better for me EASA?
In order to integrate my iPad on my dashboard,
I want to move my vario, ils/vor and heading.
Thanks!
Arnaud.

Here are my plans for information
But I still don't know if I'm allowed for that.

Arnaud:
My panel is similar to yours (albeit with a full radio stack). I mount the iPad (in my case a mini) vertically in the position where the two blank instrument cutouts to the right of the VSI are. It doesn't obstruct anything. I would be adverse to losing the standard 6-pack arrangement.

Re: Disposition of the 6 fundamental instruments
Thanks Steve, my iPad is a pro 10.5 and it obstruct to much.
I don’t care about loosing the T organization compare to have a clean and embedded installation.
I will keep all my 6 instruments, i will just have to adapt myself.
But my residual question, is if it’s forbidden or not.
Arnaud.

Re: Disposition of the 6 fundamental instruments
I don't know about the legalities, though I've flown numerous older planes with stuff scattered all over the place. This was before the industry standardized the six-pack arrangement and it may now be required for the type certificate to remain valid. I can tell you having the real instruments scattered around like that adds unnecessary complexity to IFR and night navigation. This is especially true of partial-panel work.
You will find it more work than you might think to move all these instruments around. There is no spare length in the wiring behind the panel and they're all mutually supported by wire ties and whatnot.
I can tell you this: I would not purchase a plane laid out as you propose.

Re: Disposition of the 6 fundamental instruments
Arnaud,
Are you going to fly in clouds under instrument conditions? There are FAA guidelines about having your IFR primary and type approved instruments directly in front of you. The ipad is not an approved primary instrument. You would be able to do it if the airplane was limited to visual flights only. In the US, J-3 cubs will mount an ipad on the panel right in front of the pilot but they are VFR only. I don't know how EASA regulations come down on this.

Re: Disposition of the 6 fundamental instruments
I may be wrong, but I thought panel mounting an uncertified piece of equipment (like an iPad) in a certified airplane was a no-go. Or at least would require reams of paperwork. In the US, anyway.

Dear arnaud
Check on easa web site , but it’s sure you cannot have ipad as primary instrument , the solution with easa is a removable installation
Cordialement
