Rudder tab

Post by astaib »

Hello,

How do you setup your rudder tab?
I bought my airplane second hand some months ago and one tab is installed on the rudder and one on the left aileron.

The one of the aileron seems OK, but the one of the rudder seems not because the instrument shows the ball on the left when I fly in straight line without action on the foot.

I modified the bending on the tab, I think it's better, but the ball is stilla bit on the left. but it moves due to small turbulences.
Can it be OK without tab, or not?

How do you proceed to setup your? Altitude, cruise power, speed???

Thank you.

Arnaud.

I"m not sure, but it might not be the rudder, it may be the castor wheel is crooked in flight. There are several topics here about the "corked" nose wheel issues.

I had similar; I bent the tab a little and the out of balance was less, then I bent it some more and out of balance was then nil (in smooth air).
So you could give this a try?

Hello,

Mine was bent to the left (when you look in flight direction), So I bent it less (to the right). The ball is closed to the center, but not perfectly centered.
This is why I'm asking myself to remove it, because if I bend it more to the right it will be aligned to the rudder.

Interesting. I would have thought that the specification of the rudder is with the rudder trim tab attached, so if it was me I wouldn't remove it, even if it is set straight ..

You can bend it, but cannot remove it without re-balancing the rudder.

What do you mean by re-balancing the rudder?

Flight surfaces are balanced to minimize flutter. But the topic is best left to the engineers.

I do not think you can legally remove the trim tab. You will void the Certificate of Airworthiness.

Having dealt with this issue a couple of times on the DA20, I would suggest that you level the aircraft in the hangar and make sure that the ball is in the middle. I have seen that being the issue a few times.
