Power supply for iPad charging.
I have one question about the intensity for this plug. I plugged a transfo to have 12v on a cigarette socket but it’s limited to 2A (it is written on the panel).
When I was only charge my iPad it was ok but as I now want to power a ads-b that need 2,1A it may be too much.
What do you recommend?
Thank you.

Re: Power supply for iPad charging.
Don't confuse 2A at either 12V or 28V (the voltage of your panel socket) vs. 2.1A at 5V (the voltage for charging an iPad). Assuming 100% conversion efficiency of your USB plug, your iPad won't draw more than 10.5 watts. 2 amps maximum current draw at 28V of the panel socket = 56 watts, so your panel socket has plenty of headroom for powering an iPad.

Arnaud:
I'm sure you are aware that the panel socket is approved for ground use only. I'm not sure why this is (perhaps because it is fused, and the fuse is in the engine compartment). Also, it is not switched by the Master, so if you leave something connected to it which draws current, you may return to a dead battery.

Re: Power supply for iPad charging.
Steve,
Yes I know it because it is written on it.
But I use it during once airborne ... not good, I know.
What is the solution to have a certified power supply in Flight?
Thanks

If you squint real hard that "Ground Operations Only" kind of fuzzes out
I plan to rework mine so it runs off a breaker connected to the main avionics bus.

Find a spare breaker position on the main aviation bus.astaib wrote:Lol. Can you tell me what modifications has to be done?
Get a new breaker for same. I ordered and will use a 2A breaker of the same model series as the existing ones.
Have it installed and the wire feed to the accessory plug connected to it, removing the existing connection.
Get a sign-off on the installation stating it can be used in flight.
The accessory plug would now be dependent on the master being on and its breaker would now be accessible in the cockpit.
That's the plan. The trick is my panel has all the breakers way at the bottom of the panel, so a couple of instruments will likely have to be pulled to get access. Yours should be easier.

Re: Power supply for iPad charging.
Ok thanks. I have 2 free spaces .
Do you recommend to use my external transfo that allow 24->12v on a cigarette socket or something like this:

Thanks.

This particular model is new to me, but that is a good approach others have taken.astaib wrote:Ok thanks. I have 2 free spaces .

Your question is a little unclear. Many stick-it-in-accessory-plug adapters are designed to handle 28 volt aircraft systems. you don't need to step it down to 12 volts to use a USB power plug.

Re: Power supply for iPad charging.
Ok. When I bought it came with a transfo that plug on one side in the panel and the other side is a cigarette socket.
I placed a double USB adapter in the socket and placed everything behind my panel (properly latches).
But ok course I would prefer to avoid all this wires and devices compare to a simple 28v USB adapter.
