I just spent five weeks living at 6,700'msl. I bought an oximeter (Masimo) and tested myself a few times a day after about 3 weeks, so I should have been as acclimated as I was ever going to be. My saturation was always in the 94-96 range and my pulse was 10-15bpm higher than usual.

Back home at 0'msl, I'm at 98-99 saturation and my pulse is back to normal (low 50's resting).

Back in the cockpit this week I'm going to test at 5,000' and see what I'm reading. Colin may be on to something with using oxygen much lower than is required.

A few years ago Flying magazine did a series of articles on using O2 lower. And I believe it was Flying that pointed out the 12.5K is an artificial number that coincides with being just above the optimal cruise altitude of the DC3.
This also has come up on BeechTalk a number of times and Pilots of America. I think there is a growing percentage of pilots that use the O2 before 12.5K.

Part 135 flights require use starting at 10K for flights after 30 minutes.

135.89 Pilot requirements: Use of oxygen.
(a)Unpressurized aircraft. Each pilot of an unpressurized aircraft shall use oxygen continuously when flying -

(1) At altitudes above 10,000 feet through 12,000 feet MSL for that part of the flight at those altitudes that is of more than 30 minutes duration; and
