Re: LED wingtip - Pulsar or Whelen
I would like to replace my position/strobe lights with LEDs, but I didn’t see where there are any that are STC’d. Did I look in the wrong place, or what did others do to legalize their installs?

Whelen Orion 600's are direct replacement for the A600's originally installed. I had this done a couple of years back. The shop just had to provide a different ground connection for the static/lightning shielding.

Same here. My shop and I did the 600's, and they decided it didn't even require a 337, since they were nearly a direct replacement. Certainly no STC required, but some shops have filed the 337, while others have not felt it was needed. They are an incredible improvement, by the way, and they look way cooler than the original OEM wingtip lights! You also gain a small amount of wingtip clearance, maybe an inch or two, if you have a tight hangar.

Also trimmed 4 lbs. off empty weight - ballasts and the brackets they're mounted on both removed.Rick wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2019 6:57 pm Same here. Re: LED wingtip - Pulsar or Whelen
Perhaps the topic has been killed to total death already, but i don't think I saw anything about the footprint of the Pulsars being a problem. Persionally I think they're ugly and like that the Orions are factory, but opinions aside... I saw one that had the pulsars and because they have a smaller footprint it left more of a gap and a noticeable tan line around the base, just looked sloppy all around. Perhaps the location could have been chosen more carefully - do these have the classic grimes mounting pattern or do new rivnuts have to be located?

Re: LED wingtip - Pulsar or Whelen
With the airplane apart for the Annual, I finally got around to doing this...
I brought the wingtips home to do the job - easier on my workbench, plus all of my electronics tools and test gear is at home. If any of you need to do this, I would recommend buying the mounting brackets from Diamond. They are expensive (about $100 each), but make attaching the grounding conduit a breeze without any drilling, etc.
Now, I can't wait to recompute my W&B, and extend my lead as the lightest DA40 on the Wiki W&B list...

The most important thing. But I retain bragging rights for useful load.
