What is the solution for minimal ABS-B out compliance with the mandate? I think that it would be a lot cheaper to buy a portable receiver for -In and weather.

If you can get a GTX 33ES (extended squitter), or you can upgrade you unit to ES, then I think that complies. Not 100% sure on the compliance, but this was offered to us as an ADS-B out only option by a avionics guy.

I stand corrected. This does not work for DA40s (see next post). Everything is more complicated than it seems

Back when I owned a DA42-VI, I was able to upgrade my GTX33 to a GTX33ES for only about $1500 by sending it into Garmin; this provided ADS-B Out but not IN weather or traffic.

However this upgrade was possible only because the DA42-VI has much newer G1000 installation software that supports configuration of a GTX33ES through the G1000. That's not the case for Lycoming DA40s, which is why DA40 owners have instead been installing GTX345R units; these units are separately configured by a laptop computer and thus don't require the G1000's software installer to support the GTX345R.

Lowest cost would be to install a Garmin GDL82 or a uAvionix SkyBeacon when it becomes certified at the end of the year. But those are UAT 978MHz, U.S. only solutions that won’t work in Canada when/if ADS-B is mandated in Canada in a few years since NavCan has stated it’s going to be Mode S Extended Squitter 1090 MHz only when it will be mandated. Things could change since then though.

So in Canada your cheapest ADS-B out solution could be a Stratus ES (if you aleady have a waas compliant gps such as the Garmin 430W) or ESG (with waas gps), or a Garmin equivalent (GTX335) for slightly more money.

Use a 199$ USD uAvionix Scout for ads-b in broadcasting to Foreflight. Or the 256$ CDN Stratux

Well looks like no software patch is coming that will let us use the GTX33ES for ADS-B out. I will bite the bullet and upgrade but that just raises the next question. Do I order a WAAS version or is the GIA63W (v6.4) a compatible WAAS position source for a GTX 335R or GTX345R?

Thanks.

In my Phase 1 G1000NXi system, the GIA63W is a compatible source for the GTX345R.

Sorry - I should have researched first. I have my answer. For a legacy G1000 even with version .23 the GIA63W cannot be used. I feel like I am in a comedy routine: I have all the pieces by the answer is still no at every level!
