G1000 Trainer on Windows 10

Post by Diamond_Dan »

I have started my IFR training and need to get serious about learning to use the G1000. I have had no luck trying to get it to work on my Windows 10 machine. It used to run either MFD or PFD but not both (installed from a borrowed disk). I just purchased new from Garmin (9.01) and uninstall/reinstall made it worse. When I try to turn it on I get SHUTTING DOWN. And that's about it. If I persist, my machine locks up hard, can't even get to task manager and I have to hold the power button. Ideas? Does Garmin still support this 10 year old software?

I have a similar issue with Windows 10. Mine will start in dual screen mode. After just a few minutes of running, I get red X's, then shuts down. It worked fine on the older Windows platform. I wonder if it's an issue with the 32 bit version of older Windows and the newer 64 bit version of Windows 10?

Anyone know?

I have been running v12.0 on Windows 10 for a while now, in dual screen (PFD / MFD) mode, with no problems. V12.0 has been out since 2011, so I'm surprised you can still get the v9 version. v12.0 is still a 32-bit program.

9.01 is the latest available for the DA40 on the Garmin website. It shows 12.00 for the DA40F, but I would be willing to try that if it works.

Edit - From the Garmin S/W requirements - has the same note for 9.01 and 12.00:

This PC Trainer operates on Windows® 2000/XP/Vista®/7 platforms only; Windows 8/8.1 and Mac® operating systems are not supported. These requirements are essential for successful installation and operation. If your system does not meet these requirements, we cannot support your installation.

I just ran the 12.00 install kit again, it contains selections for both the DA40 and DA40F, so I think you are ok there. As far as the installation requirements, all I can tell you is it's running on my Windows 10 box just fine. YMMV...

I just ordered a DA-40 NG and it will be delivered in June. Garmin sent me the G-1000 NXi PC Trainer on a CD. (Apparently we can't download it.) I am totally steeped in the Apple environment. Has anybody tried to run this on a Mac using a Windows virtual machine or boot camp?

I just tried v12 on a VMWare instance on a Macbook Pro of Windows 10 Professional 64 without any issues. Works perfectly.

I went home and tried the Garmin program in the "compatibility mode" and it worked perfect. It must have been the difference between operating systems.

Congrats on your new DA40 NG; the ones we delivered last month also have the new G1000 NXi flight deck.

But it seems that Garmin's website only shows NXi PC trainers for Beech and Cessna products.
How did you order a G1000 NXi PC Trainer CD for a Diamond DA40 NG?

I've been running "legacy" G1000 PC Trainers on my Mac running BootCamp and Windows 7 for many years, but I'd love to order an NXi CD (for either the DA40 NG or DA62). Where/how did you get your CD?

Secured a copy of 12.00 and installed it on my Windows 10 machine. I ran the Windows compatibility troubleshooter beforehand and accepted the recommendations. Not sure if/how it would have worked without, but it was cheap insurance. It works great and I finally have dual screen mode. Now I just need to figure out how to simulate some training scenarios with it. I played with a Steam version of Microsoft FS but didn't get very far. I will try X-plane next, i don't think it really matters for what I am trying to do. (I know, read the directions) Does anybody use it stand-alone?

Garmin really needs to update their website. There is no way I would have known that 12.00 is the latest for the DA40 non-F without Rick's help.

Thanks!
