Canopy Cleaning Solutions

Post by dwurfel »

Just for grins and I do think an important topic. Since the DA-40 has probably the best view of any airplane what do you guys use to keep it clean and keep the scratches off as well. I have been using a large very wet cotton towel to wipe the
dirt off or at least dissolve it. Then use Plexus with a fiber cloth to clean and polish it further. I have heard Pledge does a good or better job and have actually used it on my motorcycle screen with good results. I have also used Pledge on the wing leading edge to make cleaning up bugs after each flight a little easier. What do you folks use? :bow

Despite its high cost (over $20 per spray can), been using Plexus for years with great results. Helps to fill in small scratches on DA40 canopies that have been somewhat neglected. Highly recommended.

I've also tried Prist plexiglass cleaner, and it doesn't work as well.

I've also heard of many pilots using Pledge, but haven't tried it myself. Seems like it would also make your plane smell "lemon fresh," but I've heard it eventually leaves a yellowish tint on canopies due to residual wax residue.

I use Sprayway to clean most often and then if I'm headed out on a long trip or my wife is coming along I do an extra polish with Plexus.

Oh. And I use Pledge on the FIKI leading edges, for that lemon fresh ice protection.

And that doesn't clog the tiny pores (800 laser-drilled holes per square inch) of the titanium TKS panels with wax residue? I've only ever used plain water on my TKS panels.

I used to use Plexus, but it's no longer available in the UK, so I switched to Clear View instead. It seems just as good and is cheaper, so has my vote.

I am following the advice of the Lifestyle Aviation ferry pilot who delivered the plane. He seemed to have long experience with the DA42. When I have been cleaning it I've actually thought the smashed bugs were the greatest danger to plugging the holes.

But so far, no clogging that I have noted.

I use Plexus also. It is expensive, put is the best product I have found. I have tried some cheaper substitutes, but they do not seem to perform as well. The last few cans of Plexus I purchased through Amazon prime as my local pilot shop does not stock it anymore.
