2007 XL Annual - Amsafe and Guardian CO costs
Hi all,
Has anyone had recent experience in replacing these "expired" components? What costs were involved, parts and installation? Any insight as to how to keep these 7-12 year recurring costs under control? Thanks in advance.
These are the numbers I was quoted for parts:
According to AmSafe, the original inflators are no longer available.
The superseded P/N 509667-217 inflators are $704.25 each with a 6 week lead time to get them. They have a 12 year life.
AmSafe has no refurbished electronic control modules P/N 508358-421 in stock.
They can refurbish yours for $460.00 and a 1-2 week turn time. A new module is $1297.00.
The seat belts can be used as is, until parts are available.
The Guardian CO detector P/N 452-201-004 is $598.80 and the old one gets sent back to guardian. It has a seven year life.

I have a Guardian 553 in my 2001 DA40. I just did the second replacement. Although the required TBO is stated as 7 years, the device actually has a drop dead feature. Exactly 5 years to the day after first power-on it stops working and gives a CO sensor fail message. I returned it for an exchange unit for $349.

Diamond sold a lot of airplanes 07-08, No one has had to replace these parts that are now becoming semi-obsolete and out of date?
What good Diamond shops are still around the US for annuals? Northwest?
What are some current costs anyone has paid for an annual, with these added costs?
Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

I had my AmSafes in my 2007 XL replaced at my last annual. It was done at Clay Lacy at KBFI in Seattle. Took a couple of weeks, and wasn't cheap, but not much of a hassle either.

Thanks for the response Sara, we have sister airplanes, mine is 730!
Clay Lacy just finished annual, $7300 this year with the added surprises. Ouch.

When I was looking at the XLS after I had my DA40 already, the salesman said, "Yup, Cirrus has the parachute, but we have the open casket seatbelts."
Unbelievably, I noticed them showing up on commercial flights.
Does anyone know of accidents where they were triggered? What was the result? (I know quite a few people who had car accidents with airbags and it is a vast difference with and without.)

Good question Colin. I too would like to know how well they protect the occupants.
Also, two weeks ago, I flew on a brand new Delta B-737-900. I was very surprised to see an airbag attached to my lap belt.

Exactly. Doesn't that mean we're flying around with a LOT of explosives on board a commercial flight?an airbag attached to my lap belt

Yes, but I'd far rather have them than not. The "brace, brace, brace" thing is helped quite a bit. See https://www.amsafe.com/wp-content/uploa ... rcraft.pdf

Re: 2007 XL Annual - Amsafe and Guardian CO costs
I was also very surprised to see airbags on commercial flights. Thats a lot of $700 inflators and $500 controllers to replace on a regular basis! The mass production cost savings dont seem to be filtering down to us, unfortunately.
Lots of airbags in Cessnas too, wonder how all of them are working out in real situations?
I read once that a DA40 in a near full "controlled" stall, slowly mushing to the ground, has a descent rate lower than a Cirrus under the parachute. May have been in Philip Greenspun's excellent blog. Granted, you are still moving forward, and part of the parachute safety is in the beefy Cirrus landing gear built to absorb the impact.
Thoughts about this?
