Yet another fuel pump failure on 2003 DA 40

Post by Gearle »

Logging another duke failure for posterity, a rebuilt Duke, after purchasing the plane two years, about 200 hours ago. The previous owner supposedly had it rebuilt; taking advice on the board I have purchased a Weldon pump.
The previous duke never really sounded very good to me, either a lack of rubber mounting or its construction made it always sound like marbles in a can, a 1960s house door buzzer or something similar to that.
I hope to get it installed this week and will reply back on how it sounds.

I just bought a Weldon as spare to be prepared. I am on my second Duke, this one has lasted for 700 hrs though.

That's a feature of the Weldon pump. If you buy one and keep it in the plane's luggage area, it will keep the Duke alive for a lot longer.

Ha, good idea.
The Weldon pump is installed, no issues. The pump sounds MUCH different, not at all like to Duke. No ball bearings in a coffee can sound anymore. An order of magnitude lower amount of noise. Not really a noise but a nice hum. I could hear the Duke pump all the time, after starting with the canopy open or in flight. Now I can't hear it at all. The only way to know the Weldon is on now is to turn off the engine.

I bought a DA-40 last year and the fuel pump was replaced as part of my pre-buy. I have the S/N and P/N for the new pump. How do I find out which brand it was from these numbers? Thanks.

Weldon part number is 18002, Duke part number is 5100-00-xx.

Weldon pump still going strong (several "Duke pump intervals" later).

I have the rebuilt Duke sitting in a box - don't think I will ever use it.

My OE Dukes pump (knock-on-wood) is still working at 15.5 years and about 770 hours. Perhaps that is due to the fact that I have a new Weldon part sitting in the hangar. Perhaps due to my sparing use of the electric pump (takeoff and landing only, not for switching tanks). Just one datapoint...

I noticed there are 2 part numbers for the Weldon. 18002-B and also 18002-BB. Anybody know what is the difference between the two?

Steven:

There is no P/N 18002-BB listed on the manufacturer's website. The 18002-B is the correct part for the DA40:

https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/923a4a_a ... 608d7f.pdf

They do manufacture a P/N 18002-B8 for certain Cessna models:

https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/923a4a_1 ... bf2b9e.pdf

We are lucky - that part costs 50% more than our pump...
