They nuts/bolts are a bit tricky to torque as they each require a different tool to reach/tighten. If I recall correctly, a torque wrench could only be used practically on 1 of them.

I'm building an experimental right now and just finishing up the motor installation. One thing that I have realized is that it is more difficult for me to trust mechanics. I know that there are mechanics that reuse the star lock washers out of laziness or not having replacements. These washers are single use washers. Use them once and then throw them away. If your mechanic reused the lock washers then that would likely be the reason for this. Also when your mechanic is wrenching on your plane ask to take a look at his torque wrench. When was the last time it was calibrated? If it isn't calibrated annually with proof written on a sticker on the wrench then you have a lazy mechanics. Find someone else. Last question. Did he or she even use a torque wrench on these bolts?

I don't have a real answer other than bolt thread locker isn't specified at all in the lycoming manual. I can't think of any place it is usually used on an airplane.

Rich, i have the same issue. I suppose 242 would work. Normally 242 is for a sealant on pipe threads isn’t it? Maybe ill give the 242 a try.

242 works fine. It was, in fact, recommended by Diamond for this very purpose.

My only starter mounting issue was the small "arm" that connects the starter to the block cracked. The starter stayed in place well enough that it went unnoticed until the annual. But something that gets a look with a flashlight now each time the cowling is off
